If you do the same thing you did last year at this time, you'll get the same results. What's the big problem with the way that we set goals, and what can we do about it? In this episode, I give you a simple process for achieving your goals in 2020. Follow this process, and you will be successful in achieving your goals this year.

Show Notes

Setting goals, whether big or small, is always a great way to keep yourself motivated, make progress, and achieve success. As you set these goals, one thing that will help you see them through is to be mindful about them, set realistic and achievable goals to get that good hit rate by the end of the year.

Before you start writing down all the things you want to meet this year, take a step back and re-evaluate how you were able to achieve the goals you set last year. What went well? What methods in checking in on your goals worked? Which goals didn’t you hit? What was the opportunity there? Taking all the lessons you learned from the earlier years and following this process outlined will get you to where you want to be with your goals by the end of this year.

Get your goals accomplished using this recipe:

  • Reconnect with your vision. Take a moment and remember what it is that you’re trying to achieve in general. What is your vision in the future? How do you picture your best life? What is it that you truly want for yourself and the people around you? Write them down and revisit them from time to time to make sure they are still true. Be clear on what it is that’s fueling your journey and why you’re doing what you’re doing and make sure you have a vision for what that looks like.
  • Set an outcome that you would like to achieve by this time next year. Think about your big picture goal and make sure you are realistic with it and that you are able to measure them in numbers, whether that’s an income goal, number of courses, number of classes attended for your certain niche, number of books you want to read, etc., this will allow you to feel good when you look back by this time next year.
  • Taking from the book 12 Week Year by Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington which focuses on improving your productivity and hit rate with goals, they said that to make the most of your goal you should break down your goal into four steps. After you have written your four steps, write 12 tasks under each step which you have to complete every week. By doing this, you shift the focus to the first step (12 tasks) you’ve written down and not worrying about how you will reach your end number by the end of the year.
  • Develop Atomic Habits. The idea of atomic habits is to change very small habitual behaviors to develop habits that support the completion of your goals. An example of an atomic habit is the nightly preparation to decide what is it you need to complete tomorrow so that you can get your weekly goal done. Every night, develop a habit to sit down with your planner or outlook and list down all the tasks you need to do, not just for your goal but for the day in general. These atomic habits will put us in a position to win over the possible challenges that we will face. These small habits that you develop will not only help you achieve your goal but help shape you as a person and help you grow.

It is important to identify goals and work on them in a way that you could be proud of by the end of the year. When you encounter a roadblock, remember to take a step back and go back to bullet number one on this list. Don’t be frustrated when you can’t achieve all your goals, learn to adjust and trust in the process. Remember to celebrate hitting your goals; whether it’s just one of ten goals because at the end of the day a win is still a win.
