Ranking YouTube videos on Google search is a great way to get free traffic to your website. In this episode I continue my review of the Rankings Institute. Specifically, I address how you can use popular Web 2.0 properties that dominate the search engine results to your advantage and siphon off traffic to your site. Additionally, we take a look at the corn sheller site (we have not looked at it in months, and it is still making money).
Ranking YouTube Videos On Google
This week, I talk about more learnings from Andrew Hansen's Rankings Institute (review). The course has eight modules, and I have been trying to pick one thing out of each module to share with you each week (without giving away too much, of course).
You can learn more about the Ranking's Institute here.
As affiliate marketers, we often think about ranking our websites for a particular keyword. But the truth of the matter is that smart marketers have know for a long time that Google favors large Web 2.0 properties with big domain authority when they are ranking web pages. And their favorite site seems to be YouTube.
It's no surprise that Google loves to rank YouTube vides, especially given the fact that YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world and therefore one of the most important sites on the web.
It turns out that it can be really easy to rank videos for certain keyword phrases by leveraging the domain authority of YouTube.com and then back linking to the video URL. Once people see your video, you can ask them to click the “blue link in the description” for more information and “bingo” — instant traffic.
Now, you may be thinking — “I don't have any videos to post” and “I am terrible with video”. No worries. There are plenty of people that will create videos for you on Fiverr.com. For example:
Corn Sheller Update
Another thing covered in this episode is an update on the corn sheller site. Most of you know the story. I made the site as a test, and didn't touch it much after that. To date, the site has made about $700 in two years. Not really retirement money, but pretty cool considering the minimal investment.
One thing I discuss is making a video to try and rank to drive more traffic to the site. We'll have to see how that goes.

On top of that, we take a look at the Corn Sheller site. It’s been more than two years, where are we? You’re not going to believe it. I have some plans for that site that we’re going to talk about today. All this and more on the Late Night Internet Marketing Podcast…
Notes from Mark…
We’re back on track, welcome to Episode 77. I hope you’re having an absolutely fantastic day.
I’m happy to be back on the mic and I hope you enjoyed Episode 76 where we had a little interview flip-around, that was kind of interesting. If you have any questions for me about what it’s like to get started or stuff that’s on your mind, you can check out that episode and you can leave a comment, I’ll try to get back to you. I try to answer all of those. I don’t always, but I try. It’s a pursuit, it’s a journey.
Hey Mark –
Great job on this episode with the info on ranking with a YT video.
I’ve spent the last several weeks converting a bunch of my related sites into 3 authority sites. But, with the inability to create links using the old methods, I’ve been struggling with how to get any links built that might count. After having my ass royally kicked by Google over unnatural linking, I’ve kind of fallen into a depression. I’ve always believed in value and uniqueness as guiding principles…and my sites were built with those in mind…but with Google’s sluggishness on getting their rankings straight, I fell victim to the temptation to build a bunch of fake links to help stay competitive. Obviously, I wish I could go back and do it differently, but that’s simply not within my power.
Of the 3 authority sites I built, one seemed to be a great candidate for a topical testimonial video on YouTube. So I just went and hired someone on Fiverr who can definitely play the part I need, and I should have something usable for a pretty decent price in the next 10 days or so.
So, this perspective and the accompanying information was very encouraging. And it moved me to action.
Thanks!

Thanks for the new podcasts Mark! Glad to hear you on the mic again!
Mark! Welcome back!
Two great episodes, back to back.
I have about 30 videos on YouTube, and have been trying to figure out the best way to optimize those. REALLY appreciate the guidance and sharing here. Like Chuck, moving me to action as well.
Be well,
Nate
Great to hear your back… Hopefully there are more regular podcasts on the way.
I have been looking into creating a youtube video to promote my site as well.. just got to go out and get it done
Great episode Mark! Congrats on Cornsheller! You have quite the co-host.
Hey Mark, enjoyed the episode and glad you’re back! This is something I had in the back of my mind to do for my Forever Affiliate style site and after listening, it is now on my to-do list, which means it will get done soon. Thanks!
Hey Mark, question for you. I took a look at the video currently ranking on the 1st page of Google promoting the same product that my affiliate site promotes.
They did a good job with the description/video and at the end, they include a link which is a tiny URL that redirects directly to the vendor pitch page rather than their own website.
I understand in that way you wouldn’t be increasing traffic to your site, but wondering if that might result in more conversions potentially?
